Are your lips cracking? Are you experiencing dry-itchy skin? Frequent nose bleeds? Sinus problems? If you are experiencing these symptoms you may need a humidifier.
How Humidifiers Help
When temperatures drop, so does the moisture in the air. When this happens, it causes dry skin and sinus problems from the lack of moisture. Humidifiers will allow the moisture levels in your home to improve your skin and your overall health. However, if your humidifier and moisture levels aren’t properly monitored and kept clean, then too much moisture can be released in the air causing problems, such as mold and mildew. It is important to keep the humidity levels in your home between 25% -40% in the winter. However, if you have allergies, asthma, or sensitivity to mold, we recommend you talk to your doctor before using a humidifier.
Different Kinds of Humidifiers
- Steam Humidifiers – turn water into steam and spray that into the home. This could be a single-room humidifier, or a whole-house humidifier attached to your heating system.
- Fan Powered Humidifiers – These run water over a screen/ pad and the unit’s fan circulates air through it absorbing some of the water as it goes through. If it is a stand-alone humidifier then this air is blown directly into the room. If it is a whole-house humidifier then this moist air is blown into your heating system ductwork and distributed throughout the house.
- Bypass Humidifiers – These water over a screen/ pad as well, however they depend on the circulating fan in your heating system to blow air through this and into your home. This style can only be installed as a whole-house system.
- Ultrasonic Humidifiers – These use ultrasonic vibration to produce a mist of moisture that can be blown into your home. This style is most commonly used in portable humidifiers.
